This book is...fine. I feel like I should have enjoyed it more. A paranormal mystery/adventure starring librarians, with a side of romance--what's not to like? It just somehow was not all that engaging for me.
For books with some similar themes which I did find thoroughly engaging, I would recommend The Left-Handed Booksellers of London and The Sinister Booksellers of Bath.
Wow. Salus packs a whole lot of history and commentary into fewer than 200 pages here, but in a very readable and often entertaining manner. My favorite chapters were the early ones on UNIX, but I enjoyed the whole book.

This book really spoke to me in a number of ways. Let me start with a few quotes that demonstrate some of the themes and goals of this book.

The philosophy and broad examination of science in this book is woven amid, and developed by, many fascinating details about the likes of crows, fungi, cicadas, lichen, eels and ants, as well as ponderings on the author's own life. This is a valuable and fascinating book that I would recommend to anyone.
